Why Belém?
NATURE
Feed your senses
The Mastery of Creation in all
of its splendor, awaits you here.
The Amazon region is, truly, other-worldly; unlike anything you’ve ever before experienced, anywhere else. Nature’s abundant splendor in this part of our planet, not only is rich and exuberant, but moving, and profoundly impacting, too. This also is a greatly challenged region of our earth, with numerous problems centered around poverty, neglect, and abandonment. It’s not just the world that needs to awaken to the Call to Consciousness which Laudato Si’ and QUERIDA AMAZONIA exhort, but all peoples need to better know and understand Brazil and the Amazon region, which we suggest begins by experiencing it, comfortably & securely.

SPIRITUALITY
Feed your soul
It’s little known outside of Brazil that the world’s largest Roman Catholic pageant, revolving around the sculpture of Our Lady of Nazareth, Queen of the Amazon, takes place in Belém, every year on the second Sunday in October. Called Círio de Nazaré, it’s also one of Brazil’s largest annual festivals after Rio’s Carnival celebrations.
There’s no way to sufficiently express the energy which emanates from a rapturous gathering of over two million faithful who accompany the statue of Our Lady of Nazareth along the 2.25 miles (3.6 kilometers) course from Belém’s Cathedral to Our Lady’s Basilica, that Sunday, every October. That energy continues to permeate Belém, throughout the year. The tradition of transformative powers associated with the statue of Our Lady of Nazareth dates back to 1700. She awaits you in Belém.

CULTURE
Feed your mind
Belém is an extraordinary and culturally rich colonial city, founded in 1616 by the Portuguese; it’s the first European settlement on the Amazon, and gateway to the Great River.
Aside from containing many splendid, colonial architectural structures (jewels, in fact) – considering numerous, marvelous churches of varied styles and different eras, spanning 408 years – Belém also has an unusually rich Belle Epoque history and sensibility, dating to its glory days in the 19th century.

COP 30
In November 2025 Belém will host the United Nations Conference on the Framework Convention on Climate Change meeting (COP). An initiative that was born at the 1992 Rio de Janeiro “Earth Summit” will be held for the first time in its history, in Brazil, next year, when the eyes of the world will indeed be focused on Belém – a city that well represents the expressions from which Laudato Si’ and QUERIDA AMAZONIA are sourced. This is also an ideal time to visit Belém, as the city is experiencing a significant revitalization: restoring and enhancing its public spaces and monuments, in preparation for the COP 30 event.
